Identification number of the car (VIN)
The most important information on a vehicle contains in identification number (VIN). VIN is beaten out on шильде, fixed on the dashboard at the left under a windscreen.

Besides, VIN is present at the certified label fixed on a driver's door, and is beaten out on a beam of a frame of the car under a threshold of a door of the forward passenger.

VIN is used for identification of the car and can be useful at acquisition of spare parts. The producer adheres to the international standards therefore VIN consists of 17 signs and has the following structure (on an example of petrol models):

VIN begins with the international code of the producer (World Manufacturer Identifier) which settles down on the first position and consists of three signs.
The letter To means the country the manufacturing companies (Korea), N serves for designation of make of the car (KIA), the third letter in the international code of the producer indicates category of the car, where:
A — the Car
C — the Truck
D — SUVs and other vehicles falling under the categories SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) and MPV (Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle)
E — the Cars intended for the European market
H — Minibuses
J — the Car (Ford)

It should be noted that KIA cars of the Russian assembly, in particular JSC AVTOTOR company production, have other international code - H4H. By the way, the appendix #2 to «approval such as a vehicle» (the document describing marking of the car) established the following locations of a VIN code: on the plate of the manufacturer; in a luggage compartment, on a vertical wall in a niche of fastening of a jack; on a forward part of a frame on the right side. |
The second position (that is the following two signs) serves for designation such as a vehicle. For example, JA = KIA Sportage, FA = KIA Sephia, etc.
The third position (the sixth and seventh signs) indicates option of execution of a body. Concerning KIA Sportage they can be the following:
52 — the Five-door Versatile person of Grand
53 — Dvukhdverny of SUV
54 — the Cabriolet
55, 56 — the Five-door Versatile person
After body type (the fourth position) there is an engine coding, where
1 — cm3 SOHC 2000 on etilirovanny gasoline
2 — cm3 SOHC 2000 on unleaded gasoline
3,4,5 — cm3 DOHC 2000 on unleaded gasoline
The fifth position (the ninth sign) declares type of transmission and option of execution of a transmission.
Further, on the sixth position, there is a sign of the indication of year of release of the car: system «production chronology» at KIA differs nothing from other automobile producers:
R — 1994
S — 1995

It is possible to determine a place of manufacturing and the market of realization of the car by a letter standing on the seventh position:
A — Asan, for realization in domestic market
S — Soari, for realization in domestic market
5 — Asan, export option
6 — Soari, export option
K — Asia
Closes a VIN code, on traditions, six-place serial number of a product.
